About Us

Hi, I’m Ashley Jones (MRICS – Chartered Building Surveyor) and I’m the owner of Downlands Architectural Design and Downlands Surveying.

My background

Before I was qualified, I worked for a large firm of Chartered Surveyors in London. My projects were largely historic buildings such as Fishmongers’ Hall and the Livery Company’s other properties. I progressed further to work on the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Museum and other historic buildings within the Brighton & Hove City Estate.

I graduated, with a degree in Building Surveying, from Liverpool John Moores University in 1993. I later qualified as a member of the RICS in 1998.

Matt Bristow

Apprentice Building Surveyor

Matt has just completed a ‘T’ level in Planning Design and Surveying at East Sussex College Eastbourne campus. As part of his course he was required to complete 315 hours of work experience. Downlands Architectural Design & Surveying were pleased to accomodate him for more experience than the minimum requirement. During his time with us we were able to evaluate his progress and when the discussion on his next step as an apprentice Building Surveyor came we were only too happy to consider him.

Matt is now enrolled at Brighton University on the Apprentice Degree Course in Building Surveying one day a week and working for us the rest of the week. This will put him on the path to being a Chartered Building Surveyor very quickly after graduating in 5 years time.

Downlands

If you are looking to buy a house, commercial premises, or other property, it will probably be the biggest single investment you make and whether you are buying a good or a bad property can be difficult to know. We can help with a professional and independent survey of the property. The survey will be tailored to suit your needs and budget and we will report accordingly. We can meet you at the property after our survey and run through the main points before sending you the report.

We can inspect and report on anything from a brand new house to a centuries old listed building and have extensive experience with older properties.

Once you own a property it will need maintaining, and we can advise on this, as well as analyse defects and specify remedial actions.

For commercial property owners, we can inspect prior to purchase or leasehold agreement. We can then provide a full building survey or schedule of condition for negotiation with the vendor or landlord. At the end of a lease, you may be liable for repairs to the building, so we can advise on the technical aspects of dilapidations.

I am proud to be well respected for my knowledge of all types of building and appropriate and measured reporting of the condition of these to clients.

Ashley at DADS recently drew up the plans for a single story extension of our property and dealt with planning permission and structural engineers on our behalf. He also dealt with party wall matters with our neighbour, and remained on hand during the build to help with any queries. Throughout the process he was extremely competent and helpful, and we felt throughout that we were in very safe hands.
